Scientific MOOCs follower. Author of Airpocalypse, a techno-medical thriller (Out Summer 2017)

Welcome to the digital era of biology (and to this modest blog I started in early 2005).

To cure many diseases, like cancer or cystic fibrosis, we will need to target genes (mutations, for ex.), not organs! I am convinced that the future of replacement medicine (organ transplant) is genomics (the science of the human genome). In 10 years we will be replacing (modifying) genes; not organs!

Anticipating the $100 genome era and the P4™ medicine revolution. P4 Medicine (Predictive, Personalized, Preventive, & Participatory): Catalyzing a Revolution from Reactive to Proactive Medicine.

I am an early adopter of scientific MOOCs. I've earned myself four MIT digital diplomas: 7.00x, 7.28x1, 7.28.x2 and 7QBWx. Instructor of 7.00x: Eric Lander PhD.

Upcoming books: Airpocalypse, a medical thriller (action taking place in Beijing) 2017; Jesus CRISPR Superstar, a sci-fi -- French title: La Passion du CRISPR (2018).

I love Genomics. Would you rather donate your data, or... your vital organs? Imagine all the people sharing their data...

Providing High Speed Internet Access ... from Sahara to Equator!

Soyuz launches broadband beacon for developing world
"Four satellites soared into space Tuesday on top of a Soyuz rocket launched from the jungle of South America, beginning the assembly of a fleet of spacecraft equipped to beam broadband connectivity to billions of people beyond the reach of affordable high-speed Internet services.

The flight began at 1927:03 GMT (3:27:03 p.m. EDT) with a fiery liftoff from the Guiana Space Center, a European-run spaceport on the northeast coast of South America. The 151-foot-tall Soyuz launcher disappeared into clouds over the jungle launch base, where inclement weather forced two delays in the mission - first from Monday due to unfavorable high-altitude winds, then a 33-minute delay Tuesday to wait for a storm to pass.
The three-stage launcher, flying in a modern configuration with a digital flight control system and an upgraded RD-0124 third stage engine, deployed a Fregat upper stage about nine minutes after liftoff to complete the task of placing the four 1,543-pound satellites in an unusual 4,865-mile-high orbit over the equator.
From there, the satellites will begin linking customers in developing countries with the global Internet infrastructure, according to O3b Networks Ltd., the startup communications firm which owns the spacecraft.

Cardiac Surgery: A Safer and Expedited Anastomosis Procedure - Chirurgie cardiaque: une technique israélienne d’avenir

"SeamVad is developing a blood vessels connector. Three main circumstances require creation of an artificial connection or reconnection of blood vessels: 1.The Tear or transection of major artery. 2.Obstruction of a major artery usually due to Arteriosclerosis, a disease where deposits of fats and calcium at the vessel's wall gradually obstruct it. 3.Creation of direct connection between an artery and a vein for Hemodialysis patients. SeamVad's Automated Vascular Device includes two elements - introducer plus connector. The connector is based on bio-compatible materials with state-of the-art specific design technique. This solution can achieved remarkable clinical benefits such as: symmetrical attach of both vessel ends preventing any blood leaking, leaving optimal vessel diameter at the anastomosis site while not interfering with the blood flow. Thedevice is transparent to all known diagnosis technologies (such as X- Ray, M.R.I, Duplex – US and Doppler) which enable convenient imaging of blood flow through the anastomosis and enables intraluminal balloon dilatation and stenting procedures as well, due to its increasable diameter. Once increased (under the balloon pressure), the device keeps its new diameter firmly preventing any collapse at the conclusion of balloon dilation procedure. Installing SeamVad's device is easily achieved with its designated introducer SeamVad’s device automates and considerably improves this blood vessels connection procedure usually named "Anastomosis". Hence, SeamVad offers a safer and expedited anastomosis procedure." (Source).

Topol and T'Pol Welcome YOU Aboard the Digital Medicine Enterprise

"... a 'crowdsourced photo sharing app for health care professionals.' Launched just two weeks ago, the iPhone app is already populated with images both clinically significant and arguably beautiful -- without even the benefit of a filter. (...)
Once uploaded to the app, the images become public content (stringent privacy guidelines ensure that any potential patient identifiers are edited out). Landy envisions a sort of Wikipedia of medical images, 'a curated free-access almanac of features of medicine' that anyone can contribute to, edit, or learn from. While the company isn't disclosing any numbers yet, Landy said usership is already 'well into the thousands.'" (Source).

"HARD knocks to the head are a constant concern in contact sports — and not just in football or boxing, where recent attention has focused. Millions of girls and boys play hockey, soccer, lacrosse and other sports where blows to the head from collisions and falls are part of the game, even in youth leagues and on high school teams. (...)
A crop of new lightweight devices that athletes can wear on the field may help people on sidelines keep better track of hits to players’ heads during games and practice sessions. The devices, packed with sensors and microprocessors, register a blow to a player’s skull and immediately signal the news by blinking brightly, or by sending a wireless alert.
Athletes can wear the devices pressed tightly to their heads, held in place by a headband within a beanie, for example, or even by an adhesive patch and Velcro.
Many of the systems are in research and development, but a few products are coming to the market this summer, including the CheckLight, a washable beanie created jointly by MC10 and Reebok." (Source)

"Hollywood death" in the movie "Star Trek Into Darkness"

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is the prequel to "The Wrath of Khan". I do not intend to rewrite what has already be written regarding "Star Trek Into Darkness", let's just say that you should call this "fan service" instead of  "a movie". There's a scenario all right, but there is no story, no creativity... quite everybody agrees on that...

At the beginning of the film, Admiral Christopher Pike (young Kirk's boss) dies... Spock tries to assist him... I'm sure you've seen (at least) one of these famous "Hollywood heart attacks" in some kind of a movie... Well, cardiologists will tell you they are famous because they're made in Hollywood... So, of course you know what a heart attack looks like: the victim stops what they're doing, their eyes open wide, they clutch their chest, make some funny noises, and then they collapse to the floor. Right?
Wrong. (Don't believe everything you see on TV.) In reality, heart attacks are often much tougher to spot from a distance... Same thing goes for death. Death is a continuum, not a moment. So says science. Instant coffee, instant heart attack, instant death. Well this "Star Trek" movie makes no exception. Admiral Christopher Pike dies as if arrested by cops pointing a gun at him and yelling: "Freeze!" (real cops don't yell "freeze!" by the way, so that's just another fiction). Spock, trying his Vulcan trick called "mindfuse" on Pike says it felt like the "download" had to stop at once because Pike had died... This is one scientific inaccuracy, coming from... Spock...

Real death is a continuum... This is precisely what makes the retrieval of vital organs tricky... The organs have to be living; the person has to be dead... dead enough... So no, Mr. Spock, death is not like a push button light switch... though transplant surgeons sure thing wish it were...

Smartphones and genomics are revolutionizing healthcare

EricTopol2013"Twice in the last two years, Dr. Eric Topol, a prominent San Diego cardiologist, used a small sensoring device that fits over an iPhone to determine that a passenger was having a heart attack on a commercial aircraft.
Made by Oklahoma City-based AliveCor, the case is built with two sensors connected to an app. Topol put the sensors on the passenger’s chest and the device works like an electrocardiogram that he could read in real-time on his phone.
An emergency landing took place for the first incident. For the second emergency, Topol was able to calm and stabilize that patient and the plane landed about 90 minutes later.
The combination of ubiquitous smartphones and mobile devices, combined with the emerging science of genomic sequencing, is making a loud impact on medicine and healthcare.
For instance, smartphones now can accurately monitor many of our vital signs, reducing the cost for an office visit. Rather than asking whether medical data can be gathered with the smartphone, the question many doctors are asking is whether the technology will help deliver better medical care?

"Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet"

Lou Thomas: "This book summarizes one of the great struggles of our age: the opportunity offered by the Internet for creating transparency and organizing resistance to dominance hierarchies, vs. the already-advanced mass surveillance that has been made possible by the increasingly cheap and available technologies for capturing not just specific communications, but *every* communication, whether by voice or text, on the entire Internet, with very few exceptions.

Cryptography is presented as a technical means through which to counteract this mass surveillance. Political constraints on surveillance are also explored, including an appraisal of both strategic (e.g., grassroots organizations) and tactical (e.g., Internet businesses) allies in supporting such constraints.

In a way, it's a race to see which tendency will get to the finish line first. Just as the opportunities for spreading knowledge, and for organizing, are increasing, the risks of being snooped upon, and stymied, by those supporting hierarchical institutions are ramping up.

The book starts with an eloquent - at times startlingly so - 'call to cryptographic arms.' 'The Internet, our greatest tool of emancipation, has been transformed into the most dangerous facilitator of totalitarianism we have ever seen...The platonic nature of the Internet, ideas and information flows, is debased by its physical origins. Its foundations are fiber optic cable lines stretching across the ocean floors, satellites spinning above our heads, computer servers housed in buildings in cities from New York to Nairobi. Like the soldier who slew Archimedes with a mere sword, so too could an armed militia take control of the peak development of Western civilization, our platonic realm...The state, like an army around an oil well, or a customs agent extracting bribes at the border, would soon learn to leverage its control of physical space to gain control over our platonic realm. It would prevent the independence we had dreamed of, and then, squatting on fiber optic lines and around satellite ground stations, it would go on to mass intercept the information flow of our new world...'

But we discovered something. Our one hope against total domination. A hope that with courage, insight and solidarity we could use to resist. A strange property of the physical universe that we live in.

'The universe believes in encryption.'
